CBD for Sleep: Getting the Best Product

Lack of sleep can be an unfortunate fact of modern life, with some reports revealing that half of all Americans feel sleepy during the day because they suffer from insomnia at night. Increased anxiety related to ongoing COVID risks, economic uncertainty, anxiety and more impacting our daily lives, it’s no surprise that sleep has risen to the forefront of universal health concerns.

One increasingly popular strategy for sleeping better is taking cannabidiol (CBD), a derivative of cannabis. More and more commonly, CBD is used to improve sleep and decrease anxiety. But with limited CBD regulation in the U.S., it can sometimes be difficult to know if you are using a safe, effective CBD treatment for sleep aid.

According to Forbes.com, a study released in April indicates that “a majority of CBD sleep products are mislabled, with 60% showing incorrect levels of active ingredients on their packaging. The study, released by CBD resource leafreport (sic), shows that more than half of the CBD products marketed as sleep aids contained levels of ingredients such as cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN) and melatonin that varied from label strength by over 10%.”

The article continues, “The most important thing to do is to make sure the brand utilizes a third-party testing lab…to ensure the product contains no harmful contaminants and that dosage is correct.” This according to Gal Shapira, a product manager at Leafreport.

All Bewel Therapeutic Dose CBD products are tested, individually by batch, by a certified independent lab to ensure that measurements of CBD and other Entourage Effect* elements contained in our consumable products (beneficial terpenes, essential oils, and trace cannabinoids including CBG and CBS) are consistently accurate. Both our 3000mg and 1500mg CBD oils have the same therapeutic grade concentration of 3.5mg of CBD per drop, so consistent dosing is easy with either size bottle.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. So, what is that? Good question. Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid–a molecular compound found in the cannabis plant. CBD is not psychoactive; it doesn’t produce a “high.” Rather CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid system, a series of chemical receptors that are closely interconnected with the central and peripheral nervous systems and other major systems in the body that are responsible for several crucial body functions, including (Yep!) sleep.

The interaction of CBD with these regulatory systems in the human body has been demonstrated to offer a host of therapeutic benefits, and many individuals worldwide rely on CBD therapeutic dosing for what they find to be relaxing benefits.

How Can CBD Help Me Sleep?

The American Sleep Association has noted that CBD–in addition to interacting with receptors that affect our circadian rhythms–might also alleviate symptoms of sleep-blocking anxiety and pain.

Of course, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently regulates against any definitive claims about CBD for insomnia, as there is still significant scientific research that is ongoing in the field. While making no medical claims about CBD and insomnia, we can say that many people use CBD as part of a nighttime ritual when they are trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Practicing healthy bedtime habits and “winding down” at night can get you ready for a good night’s sleep while using CBD for insomnia.
